Sport is inclusive for all children of all abilities and interests in our school, and we coordinate a wide range of activities for all classes.
We recognise the vital role of physical activity in the well-being and development of every child, and are constantly trying to give them the chance to participate in a wide variety of activities and sports.
Our aim is to develop our pupils into well-balanced individuals: physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. Through the varied activities of our extensive PE programme, children experience physical satisfaction in meaningful movement, self-expression, physical well being, and knowledge and techniques of sport activities.
Children develop and ascertain their physical strengths and skills at different rates. Our PE lessons, games and sporting activities are designed and adjusted to ensure the inclusion of all children. Our practice of differentiating lesson objectives ensures all children can achieve their designed targets and yet understand and appreciate that we all have different abilities and strength and our development is unique to us.
Claddagh NS has a long tradition in sports, and we maintain strong links and work closely with many local clubs such as Fr. Griffin GAA, Newcastle-Rahoon Hurling Club, West United FC and Galway City Harriers.
Erasmus +
In recent years, we participated in the European Union-funded Erasmus + HAPPENS project, which aimed to improve the health of students and staff in the participating schools across six countries in the EU. The project prioritised:
Mental Health and Emotional Education: importance of gaining self-esteem and confidence. Learning how to relax and managing stress.
Nutrition. The importance of following a healthy eating life.
Sports. Healthy body in a healthy mind.

Our Active Calendar
Sports for Success
The aim of Sports for Success is to train our school teams to succeed in inter-schools competitions. Select teams are trained during lunch breaks and Friday afternoons to prepare for up and coming tournaments. All children are given the opportunity to succeed.
School Swimming
As part of the Aquatics strand in the P.E. Curriculum, children from the A.S.D Unit and children from 3rd and 4th classes attend weekly swimming lessons at Leisureland Pool in block sessions in the autumn term, and summer term.
Active School Week
ASW is an annual affair that runs during the summer term. Our whole school community are invited to get active and have lots of fun for the week. Tracksuits replace our uniform and homework is replaced with physical tasks! ASW coincides with Screen Free Week. We run lots of fun and inclusive activities throughout the week including: Drop Everything and Run, Beat the Bleep, Walk A Mile With A Smile, Light House Gallop, Teachers vs. Pupils -5-a-side and much, much more!
Bike Week
Claddagh NS host many biking and cycling activities in conjunction with National Bike Week in June. Children from 3rd to 6th are invited to bring their bikes to school for the whole week. Our activities include Safer Cycling Training, Bike Workshops, Novelty Races, Mass Cycles and the City Cycle. Our goal is to promote cycling as a healthy and safe past time for our children and to encourage more children to cycle to school if it is safe to do so.
Sports Day
Sports Day is an annual affair which takes place in June. Sports Day is very exciting for all participants. We have separate junior and senior sports day. The children from 2nd to 6thclass battle it out in team events to gain points for their team. Each team member scores points for finishing their races and relay races and higher points are awarded for the top three finishers. This all makes for a nail biting competition and the final medal winners are unknown until all the points are tallied up during the presentation. Junior athletes are awarded an Achievement Cert for their participation. Watch out for the hotly-anticipated Teachers' Race and Parents' Race!
