We are made of words…
First thing first: You can’t do anything better than sitting down and reading to or with your child, no matter what age they are. It’s that simple.
But when you don’t have time to do that, we’re here to help.
Here is a list of useful links and resources that may help you support your child’s reading, writing and oral language during the school closure.
Stories
For thousands of years, humans have survived difficult times - yes, even pandemics - by staying in the safety of their homes and telling each other stories. Nowadays, we are lucky to have the most powerful story-sharing system ever known: the Internet.
The magnificent Storyline Online has a huge range of stories, all read by familiar famous faces, and guaranteed to entertain.
Our new school YouTube channel also features a regularly-updated variety of stories for all ages, read aloud in an engaging and fun way. The stories feature prompts to get the children thinking about different aspects of understanding, and you can use these prompts as a way of discussing the tales, or even writing about or drawing pictures of the story.
Jolly Phonics
Our Junior classes use the Jolly Phonics programme to support their literacy development.
The Jolly Phonics website has a wide range of resources that will allow you to continue this work at home, if you choose to.
Writing
Writing Legends, a comprehensive writing programme for children from 3rd-6th classes, is offering free membership until the end of July.
