Ready, Set, Go – Maths is a practical maths programme we implement in the Junior and Senior Infant classes at Claddagh National School.

As part of the programme, the children work with concrete materials every day during their maths lessons. Sorting and counting practice is central to the programme. The children develop their problem-solving skills as they figure out the answers to the teacher’s questions by taking part in enjoyable, hands-on games.

The programme is based on a practical handbook for teachers devised by Eunice Pitt. It came about as the result of a project done in Northern Ireland with ten primary schools, whereby the teachers involved implemented a variety of approaches in the teaching of number as part of their lessons. The success of the programme has prompted its extension to a wide range of primary schools across the island of Ireland.
